How I Choose Logistics Partners (And Why It’s Personal)
Every company, regardless of industry, is involved in logistics in one way or another. Even if you don’t sell or supply physical goods, your organization is still part of a supply or service chain. Most businesses can’t afford - nor do they need - to build and maintain an in-house team of logistics experts. Outsourcing is often the smarter choice: more efficient, cost-effective, and scalable.
But then comes the critical question - who can you trust?
Every day, we make choices - what to buy, which services to use, and ultimately, which partners to rely on. When it comes to selecting a logistics provider for your business, the same principles apply. The decision isn’t made arbitrarily; it’s based on a combination of factors and priorities. And it all starts with industry expertise.
For importers, the key is a partner with proven experience in handling and growing businesses with similar products. For service providers, it’s essential to find a logistics partner who understands their unique needs and has successfully addressed them for others. As the saying goes, "Two heads are better than one" - especially when one of them has already navigated the challenges you’re facing.
No matter how skilled or versatile a manager is, they can’t possibly master every function or keep up with every case study. But with a specialized logistics partner, you gain more than just a service provider - you gain an ally who delivers both direct and indirect value to your business.
So, how do you find the right partner?
Yes, you’ll go through a structured selection process - tenders, and evaluations. But which provider should you choose? The one whose success will determine half of yours?
Since my experience revolves not only around cost optimization but also maintaining high service standards, my criteria are clear:
• Relevant expertise - A partner with experience in your industry. • Willingness to grow - A provider eager to develop new competencies to support your business, even if you’re not their largest client. • Long-term alignment - Someone who sees your success as their own.
Loyalty can be bought temporarily, but it’s far better to find a partner who will grow with you.
When launching a tender, I always invite both large players and boutique providers - those who won’t just work for you but with you. The right partner doesn’t just profit from delivering a service; they share in the journey, celebrate milestones, and reap the rewards of mutual success.
My Lesson
A logistics partner isn’t a cost center. They’re your shadow operations team.
Cheaper bids might save money today. But the right partner? They’ll save your business tomorrow.
