The Moment Before you Speak
🎯 A few seconds before stepping on stage, I glanced at the table - nameplate, microphone, bottle of water. Simple things, but they reminded me: in a few moments, all eyes would be on me…
That quiet pause is where every speaker’s real journey begins - not with words, but with presence. This time, I was speaking about a topic that’s deeply personal to me: motivating cross-functional teams through goal-setting with OKRs and strategic connection. We often think of OKRs as a management tool. But in practice, they’re a motivation system - a way to align people with purpose, not just numbers.
Here’s what I’ve learned about creating that connection - both as a speaker and as a leader:
🙌 Start with empathy, not data.
I began by asking, “When was the last time your team felt truly inspired by a shared goal?” It instantly turned the room into a conversation, not a lecture.
🙋Bring an “attention anchor.”
This is an unusual, personal gesture or phrase that becomes your trademark - a story, a prop, or even a brief pause before your key idea. Audiences remember the unexpected.
💬 Turn knowledge into reflection.
Instead of ending with “Thank you,” I ask: “Which OKR could you rewrite tomorrow to make it truly motivating?” The silence after that question often speaks louder than any applause.
📹 Record and review your talks.
Watch yourself speak, not to criticize, but to find your natural rhythm. The most effective speakers don’t imitate - they amplify who they already are.
🎤 For me, public speaking isn’t about performance. It’s about resonance - creating a moment that moves people to act differently once they leave the room. What’s your personal ritual before stepping on stage?
