Radio relay equipment form a critical part of telecommunications backhaul. They deliver high-capacity wireless connections where fiber deployment is impractical or expensive. Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM), also known as Automatic Coding and Modulation or link adaptation, solves this by dynamically adjusting the modulation scheme and coding rate in real time according to current channel conditions. Modern microwave radios continuously monitor link quality. In good conditions they use high-order modulations (e.g. 256-QAM or 1024-QAM) to maximize throughput. When conditions deteriorate, the system seamlessly steps down to more robust schemes such as 16-QAM or QPSK, often with stronger forward error correction. Today’s implementations support errorless switching, preserving traffic with no packet loss. Capacity adjusts allowing critical services to be prioritized while best-effort data is throttled.
