I’m Tired of Being Undervalued for What I Bring to the Table
Hey everyone, I’m new to this platform, and I want to share something honestly—without sugarcoating it. I’ve spent years studying, working, building real-world experience, and earning more than 20 internationally verified professional certificates. I’ve lived and worked between Egypt and Dubai, then came to Russia to pursue my Master’s degree.
What I didn’t expect was to genuinely fall in love with Russia.
But there is one thing I still struggle to understand: why is professional competence sometimes valued less because someone is a foreigner?
I consider myself a highly motivated, analytical, and commercially minded professional. I know how to research markets, identify opportunities, generate leads, connect with decision-makers, and find solutions when conventional methods simply don’t work.
My experience with my previous employer, Weconn, was a perfect example. The company’s business model was to connect Russian suppliers with buyers in the MENA and GCC markets. The problem was that their international outreach strategy was fundamentally ineffective.
They were using Russian .ru email domains to contact international companies—despite the obvious limitations created by international sanctions and restrictions. I identified the problem and developed a different approach. I showed the team practical ways to create international-facing email accounts, build better lead lists, target relevant companies, and reach decision-makers more effectively.
The results spoke for themselves. We started getting responses and eventually secured conversations with C-level decision-makers.
And what happened next?
Instead of recognizing the value of the work, I was essentially told: “Thank you, here’s 20,000 RUB,” followed by an offer to continue as an external agent for 1,000 RUB per online meeting and 1% commission on deals.
I declined.
Not because I’m above hard work—but because I know the value of the expertise, strategy, and results I bring.
Later, they hired another employee who was presented as the “professional” capable of handling the work. When I returned to the office and demonstrated the actual process and strategy, the results were clear.
Yet somehow, the question became:
“How can a foreigner be better than a local?” That mindset is exactly what frustrates me. Competence should not have a nationality. Results should not have a passport. And professional value should not be determined by where someone was born.
I’m not looking for someone to “give me a chance.” I’m looking for a serious, professional company where skills, results, intelligence, and initiative are actually valued.
I know what I can bring to a business. Now I’m looking for a company that is mature enough to recognize it.
